Winter Showers Bring Drought-Weathering Power
Published on January 11, 2024
For much of the world, the first weeks of 2024 are proving exceedingly wet. A string of heavy storms may be a nuisance in many areas, but for others — such as the thirsty western U.S. and freshwater-poor tropics — they are a welcome respite after summer droughts. This edition of Stormwater Report details drought-related developments in California, where watershed managers are taking new approaches to maximize the benefits of these winter storms to improve groundwater sustainability, as well as in the Caribbean, where scientists are working to improve resilience against poorly-understood flash droughts.
